Real Men Do Drink Tea!

Hilo, Hawai’i – ‘Imiloa Astronomy Center presents the next Tea Chat with JoAnn Aguirre on Thursday, June 12, 2014 from 2 p.m. – 3 p.m. In honor of Father’s Day, this month’s presentation topic will be Real Men Do Drink Tea. Tea culture is mistakenly viewed as the realm of women, but history demonstrates otherwise. According to legend tea was discovered in 2737 BC by the Chinese Emperor and herbalist Shen Nung, also known as the Father of Agriculture. Since that time, a gendered division of labor has characterized conventional tea production with men dominating almost all aspects of production, except for harvesting.

Aguirre will explore the history of the men behind tea, from its ancient beginnings to today’s contemporary tea culture. Delicious tea and pupus will be served. This event is FREE!  All are welcome…women too!

Aquirre is the owner of the Hilo tea shop called Teaching Tea located at 697 Manono Street, Suite 108B.
